On-call evidence now required at Level 3

From this assessment cycle, candidates for BIPS Professional in DevOps & Reliability must support their reliability claims with real incident records and evidence of a working on-call rotation.

The DevOps & Reliability standard has always assessed on-call practice, because reliability claims mean little without it. Until now, candidates at Level 3 could evidence that capability largely through a written account. From this cycle, the portfolio must also include primary evidence drawn from real incidents.

What has changed

At BIPS Professional (BIPS-Pro) the level description is explicit: you own the reliability of a production service, including its on-call rotation. The council agreed that the evidence should match the claim. Level 3 portfolios must now include:

  • At least two incident records where you were on call or leading the response, with your role clearly stated.
  • The alerting or runbook changes that followed, and the reasoning behind them.
  • A post-incident review you wrote or contributed to, showing how the system changed rather than who was blamed.
  • A short description of the rotation you work within: its size, its escalation path and how load is shared.

Records can be redacted. Assessors do not need customer names, internal hostnames or commercially sensitive detail. They need to see provenance and your part in the response, which is exactly what the evidence review stage is designed to check.

Why the council made the change

Employer representatives were clear that written accounts were too easy to polish. The candidates they most wanted to hire could talk about a specific night, a specific alert and a specific decision, and could say what they would do differently now.

We wanted to hear about the 3am page that went badly, not the architecture diagram. That is where reliability is actually learned.

The change also works in candidates’ favour. A well-evidenced incident record is far more persuasive in the professional discussion than a general description of good practice, and it gives the assessor something concrete to explore with you.

What this means for you

Candidates at BIPS Foundation and BIPS Practitioner are not affected. Candidates at BIPS Specialist and BIPS Expert were already expected to evidence on-call leadership, so the change brings Level 3 into line with the levels above it.

If your portfolio was submitted before this cycle, it will be assessed under the requirements in place at the time; an adviser can confirm which applies to you. If you work somewhere without a formal on-call rotation, talk to us before you apply. BIPS Practitioner may be the right entry point while you build that experience, and the portfolio route will recognise it when you have.
